The increasing number of brothels cropping up in the guise of hotels in the Maharagama area have become a cause of discomfort to area residents, JVP Mahragama Urban Councillor Devananda Suraweera said.

Speaking at the monthly council meeting he said that owing to this situation, women in the area found it impossible to travel in certain areas of Maharagama. Providing an example, Devananda alleged that a brothel along the Kottawa- Malabe road, operating in the guise of a hotel, made it impossible for women to walk alone in its vicinity.
“This environment has made the area unfriendly to children as well. This place is not the only one, there are more across the city,” he said.

UPFA Councillor Padmasiri Senadheera commenting on the issue said the problem was not one only women faced. “Men can’t walk in the area without being approached; we need to take steps to curb this,” he said.
Urban Council Chairman Kanthi Kodikara said these buildings had not been given permission to function as hotels. “We will look into how they received authorisation,” she said.
