St. Benedict’s emerged the Singer U19 T20 champions when they defeated fancied St. Peter’s by 22 runs in the final played at R. Premadasa Stadium yesterday.
St. Peter’s who came into the game as hot favourites having put up sterling performances in the earlier matches failed to deliver the goods when it was needed most.

However credit cannot be taken away for the Benedictines as their bowlers Geethal Fernando and Madushan Kularatne made the much needed breakthroughs at crucial stages of the St. Peter’s innings which paved the way for their victory.
The Peterite batting was in tatters in their run chase of a gettable target of 115 runs. Geethal and Madushan sent the Peterites reeling to 13 for 5 in the third over and then 20 for 7 by the fifth over.

Skipper Chandula Jayamanne and Taneesha Weerakoon posted a valuable 58-run stand for the eighth wicket but their separation saw them losing the remaining two wickets for the addition of only 14 runs, being bowled out for 92.
Earlier in the day St. Benedict’s taking first lease of the wicket was given a sound start by openers skipper Mahel Jayalath and Thulina Dilshan who together added 71 runs in just 43 balls.

Apart from the duo the others failed to make any impression as they lost wickets at regular intervals and were able to make a score of only 114 which they succeeded to defend.
St. Benedict’s 114 in 19.3 overs (Thulina Dilshan 45, Mahel Jayalath 24: Ashanth Malka 5 for 15, Savin Gunasekera 3 for 23)
St. Peter’s 92 in 17.3 overs (Chandula Jayamanne 39, Taneesha Weerakoon 25 n.o.: Geethal Fernando 4 for 18, Madushan Kularatne 2 for 7)
