The purchase of  garbage trucks with a open market tag of Rs. 6 million for Rs. 10.6 million was a waste of public funds, Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte municipal councillor Ranjan Ponnapperuma said.   The councilor said the municipality had ordered six of these trucks, each costing an additional Rs. 4.6 million more than their market price. Speaking at the monthly council meeting when the proposal to purchase the trucks was brought up for discussion, Ponnapperuma said the trucks could be purchased for around Rs. 6 million from another company.  “There is also a possibility of a further price reduction with a discount. Therefore I propose we cancel the tender as it will be a waste of Rs. 30 million,” he said.

Mayor Janaka Ranawaka speaking of the situation said advertisements were published calling for tenders and that the lowest one had been decided upon. “We can’t cancel these now and we can’t purchase vehicles from another company specially when they have not tendered to supply the trucks.”
