Spotlight on Milina Sumathipala today

soma2Sumathi Group chairperson and award-winning film producer Mrs. Milina Sumathipala who turns 80 today will be felicitated at a special ceremony at the BMICH with President Maithripala Sirisena scheduled to grace the occasion as the Chief Guest. The event
will coincide with the launch of two books  on Mrs. Sumathipala and her outstanding contributions to the Sinhala cinema, producing movies on behalf of Sumathi Films.

The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Praneeth Abhayasundara.
 Mrs. Sumathipala’s newest movie mission is ‘Paththini’ which is scheduled for release soon.
Sumathi Films has created a record by bagging 50 awards locally and one internationally
for the five films it had produced so far.

The first movie produced by Sumathi Films founder the late U. W. Sumathipala was ‘Unnath Daahai Malath Daahai’ directed by Lenin Moraes and released on July 16, 1976.

He also produced the second movie ‘Ahasin Polowata’ directed by Dr. Lester James Peries. The movie released on December 15, 1978. The film won several awards including the best Third World film award at the Cairo International Film Festival that year.
The third movie under the  prestigious Sumathi Films banner ‘Ganga Addara’ was produced by Ms. Milina Sumathipala and directed by Ms. Sumitra Peries. The film released in 1980 won 21 awards which was a record at the time. Ms. Sumitra Peries directed the fourth film ‘Duwata Mawaka Misa’ which was also showered with awards.

 ‘Uppalawanna’ was the next under the Sumathi banner, directed by Prof. Sunil Ariyaratne and released on July 13, 2007. The movie also bagged 8 awards including those for the best actress (Sangeetha Weeraratne), best supporting actress (Chandani Seneviratne), best music director (Navaratne Gamage) and others.
