The government said yesterday it had consulted all the parties represented in parliament before selecting the three representatives from civil  society to serve iDM_20150603_A001-6n the Constitutional Council (CC) and therefore there was no need  to contact others.

House Leader Lakshman Kiriella told Daily Mirror that the United  National Party (UNP), the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA),  the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchchi (ITAK) and the Democratic National  Alliance (DNA) were the parties represented in Parliament.

“There  are other parties such as Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP), Democratic  Left Front but they are allies of the UPFA.  They contested on the  UPFA ticket. The Speaker, the Prime Minister and the Opposition  Leader consulted the leaders of the parties in parliament,” he said. Mr.  Kiriella charged that certain elements with the backing of former President  Mahinda Rajapaksa, were attempting to scuttle the government’s business in  parliament.
