While claiming that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa would definitely contest the upcoming general elections as a Prime Ministerial candidate, his spokesman Rohan Weliwita yesterday said Mr. Rajapaksa was yet to decide under which party he would contest.

He said that the former President wgsas optimistic that he would be given nomination by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) to contest on the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) or the People’s Alliance (PA).

“The reports that President and SLFP Chairman Maithripala Sirisena had rejected nominations for Mr. Rajapaksa are not yet confirmed. MPs Susil Premajayantha and Anura Priyadarshana Yapa are still trying to get the nominations for Mr. Rajapaksa,” he said.

Mr. Weliwita said that Mr. Rajapaksa  would continue to function as an active member of the SLFP because he was one of the SLFP patrons and therefore he was most suitable for nomination. “He never left the party nor will he in future. But those who defected the party and fulfilled United National Party (UNP)’s requirements today claim that Mr. Rajapaksa is attempting to split the SLFP,” he said.
