The MPs, across the political divide in Parliament yesterday, stood up and called for the dissolution of the House to go for general elections immediately. First, Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella rose to his feet and asked for support for a motion seeking to dissolve Parliament. All the government MPs stood up in favour of this call.

Besides, the MPs from the opposition, mainly those backing former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, also rose on their feet. Eventually, Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa said he also associated himself with the call for dissolution of Parliament.

Later, Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) Leader Dinesh Gunawardane told a news conference that Parliament should be dissolved immediately in conformity with a call by the entire House.

National Freedom Front Leader Wimal Weerawansa also expressed similar viewpoints asking for the dissolution of Parliament. Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) MP Dullas Alahapperuma said the United National Party (UNP) did not have an iota of interest to enact electoral reforms in the form of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution.
