Increase in accidents in Colombo this year

There has been a slight increase in road accidents in Colombo due to careless and negligent driving police media spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera said.


Police Traffic Department statistics revealed that there has been 1502 road accidents of which 12 had fatalities from January 1 to April 1 this year. Statistics over the past two years showed  5204 accidents in 2014 with 51 fatal ones and 5729 accidents in 2013 with 51 fatal ones.


The Traffic Department further revealed that the most dangerous roads in Colombo were the Baseline Road, Colombo-Batticaloa road and Colombo-Wellawaya road. The most number of accidents have been recorded on these roads.


Commenting on the accidents ASP Gunasekera said that  police have been regularly instructing drivers regarding traffic laws and preventing accidents.


“We have been taking up all cases on traffic violations, arresting illegal drivers and issuing spot fines. We have noticed a slight increase in accidents in Colombo this year,” he said.
