Import taxes on potatoes and onions were reduced from midnight yesterday, the Finance Ministry said.

The ministry in a statement said import taxes on potatoes were reduced by Rs 25 and big onions by Rs 20.  A Finance Ministry spokesman said the taxes were increased on April 23 this year as stocks of local produce increased in the market. However the import taxes were reduced as the stocks in the market reduced when local produce stopped coming in. “The decision to reduce taxes was made in order to provide relief to the consumers,” the spokesman added. However Sri Lanka Farmer Associations have been pushing to make the country self sufficient in these agri-products and to have a planned cultivation programme instead of depending on imports
