Mother allegedly sells daughter into prostitution

A Matugama woman who had allegedly sold her 14-year-old daughter into prostitution was remanded till June 18 by Matugama Magistrate Tharanga Mahawattage.Untitled-1

The woman had charged Rs. 3000 to Rs. 5000 from each client, police said adding that the woman herself had been having a relationship with some of them.


The crime was revealed by the girl in question after she attended one of a series of seminars for school children on child abuse by the OIC of the Kalutara Division Police Children and Women’s Bureau Ms. Malka Thushari. The victim girl after being enlightened during the seminar about the seriousness of her plight and as to what is to be done under such circumstances has lodged a complaint with the Meegahatenna police who in turn had arrested her mother and produced her before the Magistrate. The girl in her complaint had said her mother had been selling her to various men since last year.
