The present regime which practises good governance will not hesitate to send Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran to jail if he is found guilty of an offence in connection with the controversial bond issue, said Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake yesterday.

Mr. Ramanayake said at a media briefing that the present regime would not throw away its victory at the January 8 election for the sake of the Central Bank Governor.

He said Mr. Mahendran’s  passport had been impounded and was currently with the Bribery Commission’s director general, and that Mr. Mahendran would apply for Sri Lankan citizenship as soon as his passport was released.

He said the FCID was not for political victimization. He said even Housing Minister Sajith Premadasa, the Board of Investment chief and several other government officials were to be probed by the FCID shortly, as it had received allegations against them. He denounced the allegations made recently by his uncle Professor Carlo Fonseka that the FCID had been set up for the purpose of political victimization.

He said there were people in this government who took money from people accused of corruption to sweep their cases under the carpet.
Media Minister Gayantha Karunatilleke said a probe was necessary to verify allegations against officials, including the Central Bank Governor. He said investigations would be made.
