In a bid to reduce the increasing traffic congestion in Colombo, proposals to construct three new flyovers have been submitted to the Colombo District Development Committee.

Head of the Colombo District Traffic Division SP Chula de Silva submitted three proposals for the construction of flyovers at the committee meeting.

SP Silva stated that Orugodawatta junction, Welikada junction, the Baseline Road and Parliament Road junction needed flyovers. He also suggested the construction of an overhead pedestrian bridge needed near the Bo tree in Pettah.

The widening of the bridge near Redi Mola at Havelock town as well as the Wellawatta bridge was also proposed. “When the road was renovated it was widened but the bridges were not widened, which cause a  traffic congestion in the area,” he said.
The increasing traffic on the Kandy Road, near the Kelani bridge also prompted a suggestion for another lane on the road.
De Silva also requested a change in the laws restricting containers to be driven only at night. Finance Minister and Chairman of the committee Ravi Karunanayake requested the District Secretary to allow only containers needed for an emergency to travel during the day.

“If the District Secretariat directs the issue to my ministry we should be able to resolve it,” the Minister said.
The Head of the Colombo Traffic Division warned that, if a solution was not found soon, motorists would spend more time inside Colombo than the travel time to Matara on the expressway. “It doesn’t matter how many expressways are constructed if the problem is not resolved in Colombo,” he said.
