Veterinary Surgeon of the Department, Dr. Nihal Pushpakumara said they were providing the elephant with nourishment to strengthen it as they could not take the elephant ashore for treatment.

“We are providing it with the necessary food and medication. The elephant is not strong enough to be brought ashore for treatment,” he said.

Director General of the Department H. G Rathnayake said a team of wildlife officers had been despatched to treat the elephant. Meanwhile, environmentalists pointed out that the elephant could not be treated in the tank as it would die soon.

Army officials, villagers and other officials in the areas pledged to help the elephant.
