The mainstream political parties are now in the process of holding meetings and interviews in a bid to prepare their lists of candidates to be fielded for the general election, informed sources said yesterday.

The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA)   held a special meeting at the former opposition leader’s office to iron out any differences between the factions loyal to President Maitripala Sirisena and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa with the selected candidates contesting the election under the betel symbol.

It has been agreed to give nomination to members loyal to both leaders.  Mr. Rajapaksa is expected to contest the election  from the Kurunegala district instead of his home base of Hambantota.

The UPFA is in the process of working out the number of slots to be allocated to its allies

The UPFA is working out the number of slots to be allocated to its allies such as Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP), National Freedom Party (NFF) and the socialist parties.
It is learnt that the MEP has sought ten slots for its nominees.

Meanwhile, the United National Party (UNP), the key ally of the government, has almost finalised its nomination lists to be handed over to the   election authorities.  Plantation Minister Lakshman Kiriella said the party had received more than 16,000 applicants to contest the election under the UNP’s elephant symbol.

He said suitable candidates would be handpicked from the applicants.
The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and the Tamil Progressive Alliance have announced that they would join hands with the UNP at this election.

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) was also to have a meeting in Jaffna yesterday to finalise its nomination list.
The period for the receipt of nominations began yesterday and would end on July 13 with the political parties and independent groups to submit their nomination lists to the District Returning Officers.

MS at SLFP nomination board today

The Nomination Board of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party will meet today with the participation of President Maithripala Sirisena at his official residence,  board chairman S.B.Dissanayake said.

He said the final decision with regard to the SLFP candidates for the forthcoming General Elections would be taken at today’s meeting.
Minister Dissanayake said there was an issue with regard to nominations of eight applicants and predicted that there were possibilities that these applicants would be rejected.

However, the minister said the President would attend for at least two to three meetings with the nomination board before finalizing the nominations list.
