Education Minister and UNP Kurunegala District candidate Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has written to Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya requesting him to take actionDM_20150717_A001-4 against former President and UPFA Kurunegala District candidate Mahinda Rajapaksa whom he said was allegedly violating General Elections Act No 1 of 1981.

Mr. Kariyawasam said the former President was using all state resources entitled to him as a retired head of state for his election campaign.  He also alleged that the former President was inflicting undue influence on public servants.  Mr. Kariyawasam said the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was also violated by the former President by entering into the fray. He therefore said the 19th Amendment might have been violated by Mr. Rajapaksa as the attitude of the legislature which approved the 19th Amendment was that a retired head of state might engage in various malpractices by contesting elections after his or her retirement.
