The Kesbewa Urban Council would be held responsible if anyone was injured at the public library due to its dilapidated condition, Councillor Tenil Rathnasiri Fernando said.

Speaking at a monthly council meeting Fernando pointed out that a project to renovate just the roof of the library building has been planned. “The roof caved in some months ago and we moved the library to another building. However the entire library building that is in bad shape needs to be renovated. If it falls on someone who visits the library we will be held responsible,” he said.

Neither the librarian nor those who come to the library have facilities and these have not been added in the renovation plans

Fernando also said the council paid a high rent to house the library instead of renovating the existing council buildings.  “Neither the librarian nor those who come to the library have facilities and these have not been added in the renovation plans. They are trying to repair the ceiling when wires dangling down from it,” Fernando said.

Deputy Chairman Hemal Dharmapriya who presided over the meeting directed the relevant authorities to look into the matter. “I will also inform the chairman of the situation,” he said.
