Plans to construct a new building for the Sri Jayawardenapura- Kotte Municipal next to the Welikada Police has been halted by the Kotte Divisional Secretariat.

In a letter, the Secretary, Amal Edirisooriya, has said that the land could be used only for commercial purposes.  Last year Kotte Mayor Janaka Ranwaka had declared that a new building would be constructed on the land adjoining the Welikada Police Station and the Kotte Municipality shifted to the new premises. “But now, that plan has changed; the building will be constructed on the existing land,” the mayor said.

Last year Kotte Mayor Janaka Ranawaka had declared that the  Kotte Municipality would be shifted to a news building  adjoining the Welikada Police Station

Opposition members in the Kotte MC said that any new project had to be implemented in the lands belonging to the municipality because many of them have been acquired by  state institutions for various projects. In 2013, Ranawaka said a hospital would be constructed in the land which housed the municipality office, but that the project however was not finalised. The hospital project was rejected by members of the council as many of them had not known of the plans.

When questioned about the initial cost of the project, Mayor Ranawaka said the new building will be constructed according to the plans that had already been made.
