Three armed soldiers who claimed to be part of the personal security detail of a well-known Army Major General who had been taken into custody by the Mirihana Police, on suspicion, on Monday night whilst travelling in a white van were granted bail after being produced before the Gangodawila Magistrate last evening.

The arrest of the soldiers had triggered concerns within the UPFA that they were planning to harm former president Mahinda Rajapaksa and former defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Ex-minister G.L. Peiris brought this matter to the notice of the Inspector General of Police and the present defence secretary.
On behalf of the UPFA, he had asked the authorities concerned to enhance the security of the former president and defence secretary and requested police to investigate the matter and reveal their results to the country.3sus3

Police said the three army men in civils and travelling in a white van with false number plates were arrested last night in Mirihana.
The army personnel had told the police that they were attached to the security detail of the Army Major General. Police are in contact with the Military Police to verify the assertion.

The Army said in a statement that the Military Police were probing the incident. They said action would be taken if the soldiers were guilty of an offence.
