The video footage of an incident at Tuesday’s UPFA election rally at the Akuressa bus terminal attended by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is going viral over social media websites.

It shows a seemingly irritated Mr. Rajapaksa moving towards a supporter just before he stepped on to the stage.
Mr. Rajapaksa’s security guards pulled Mr. Rajapaksa away to prevent any untoward incidents.
Clarifying what happened, his spokesman Rohan Weliwita said the particular supporter was under the influence of liquor and Mr. Rajapaksa had only attempted to release himself from the supporter’s grip.

Mr. Weliwita claimed that Mr. Rajapaksa had not been provided with adequate security and that some mischevious elements were sending men under the influence of liquor so as to cause a disturbance at the rallies addressed by Mr. Rajapaksa. “At the Akuressa rally, a man under the influence of liquor had attempted to grasp Mr. Rajapaksa’s hand but he managed to pull it away.

Though the ex-president is provided security personnel, they don’t have other facilities such as mobile phones or vehicles. If adequate security is provided, these incidents will not occur,” he said. Mr. Welivita urged Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to reveal the vehicle models and their numbers if they have been provided to Mr. Rajapaksa.
