Kotahena shooting: Another dies

Another of those who received gunshot injuries at last Friday’s shooting in Kotahena, died in hospital bringing the death toll to two, Police said.

Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said 36-year old Bulathsinhalage Niroshan Sampath, a resident of Grandpass, died while being treated at the National Hospital.

A 42-year-old woman was killed and 13 others were injured when some unidentified gunmen fired at a group of people campaigning for Minister Ravi Karunanayake at  Bloemendhal Road in Kotahena. Hospital sources said twelve others including nine men and three women were still under treatment for gunshot injuries at the Colombo National Hospital.  One  of those shot at is said  to be in a critical condition.

According to reports a clash between two rival underworld gangs was believed to have resulted in the shooting. The CID which took over the investigation on the instructions of IGP N. K. Illangakoon had recorded statements from a large number of people who were present during the shooting, and those who were campaigning on behalf of the minister.  However, police said no one had been arrested so far.
