Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya has banned all forms of state functions with the participation of political party candidates from today till August 18.
As such no project can be launched or inaugurated during this period at institutions coming under the purview of the central government, provincial councils or local authorities.

These instructions have been sent to Ministry Secretaries, Provincial Secretaries, District Secretaries and other government institutions

The Commissioner has conveyed this directive to the heads of Ministry Secretaries, Provincial Secretaries, District Secretaries and other government institutions. They have been asked to make sure that the participation of political party candidates should not be entertained at any cost.

The EC said government institution heads who violate this directive would be taken to task.
This step has been taken to prevent the abuse of such events to promote a particular candidate or his or her party.
The Elections Commissioner also requested candidates as far as possible to cease their campaign activities by 8.00 p.m. each day.
