Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya intervened  yesterday to try to resolve the conundrum of the nomination to parliament of those on the National List of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA), consequent on party leader President Maithripala Sirisena’s having appointed a new secretary.

In his effort to resolve the matter amicably, Mr. Deshapriya   held talks with those concerned yesterday. First he met the representatives of the UPFA. After that he met the new UPFA secretary Wiswa Warnapala and his lawyers.
Finally, he also had talks with former UPFA secretary Susil Premajayantha, who was accompanied by ex-minister G.L. Peiris.  According to sources close to the UPFA, the Commissioner tried to work out a list that was acceptable to all sides.
