A group of United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) members, elected to Parliament at the recent elections, resolved yesterday to appoint former president Mahinda Rajapaksa as Opposition Leader, informed sources said yesterday.

The members had gathered at the residence of Western Province Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga and taken this decision. About 60 members had been present.  Kandy District MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage had proposed this and Ratnapura District MP Ranjith de Zoysa had seconded it. Signatures were collected from those present on a petition to be sent to the president in his capacity as UPFA leader.
