United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Secretary Susil Premajayantha yesterday resigned from his post and conveyed his decision to President Maithripala Sirisena, who is also the leader of the party.

In his letter, Mr. Premajayantha said he functioned as UPFA Secretary since the formation of the alliance on February 11, 2004, and signed the nomination papers on behalf of the party at every election conducted during that period. He said the UPFA had emerged as a formidable political party in the country since 1978 and that he had supported the President in taking party-based decisions after he assumed office as party leader after the presidential election.

Resignation from post of UPFA general secretary conveyed to President

He regretted such criticism by these alliance partners without appreciating his role in uniting the party to win as many as 95 seats at the election.
