Acting Police Spokesman SSP Priyantha Jayakody said the preliminary investigations had revealed that she was asleep with her brother, while her parents, grandfather and grandmother were asleep elsewhere in the house. It was in the morning that they realised she had gone missing.

Police personnel assisted by the villagers spread out in search of the girl, who they believe might have been abducted by somebody yet unknown entering the partly built house through the window.

The magisterial inquiry would help determine whether she was killed while inside the house or after she was abducted.

Police said the girl’s body was sent to the Negombo Hospital  for the postmortem examination.

The child’s mother said on Friday night after watching Television, she had taken Sandewmini to bed where her sister and brother were also asleep.

“My father came home about 10.45 p.m. while my husband returned home about 12.00 midnight after dropping garment workers in his van. He asked me where Sandewmini was because she was not on the bed. We thought she may have gone to her grandmother’s room, as usual and went back to sleep,” the mother said.

She said, the next morning, when she was in the kitchen, her father asked her where Sandewmini was and it was only then that they had come to realise that the girl had gone missing.

“She will turn five on September 16, but now we don’t have Sandewmini to celebrate her birthday,” the weeping mother said and added that they did not have any enemies. Investigations are being carried out by personnel led by Kotadeniya OIC Chief Inspector Sujith Udaya Kumara under the directions of Negombo SSP Anura Abeywickrama and ASP Jayantha Athukorala under the instructions of WP North DIG H.G. Kularathna.
