The US delegation to the United Nations in Geneva said yesterday it would engage with the Sri Lankan Government to prepare a resolution on the accountability process in Sri Lanka that would receive the consensus and support of the Council.
This was said by the Chief of the US delegation at the 30th session of the UNHRC that began last afternoon.
Last month, the United States said it intended to sponsor a resolution at the current UNHRC sessions that supported the Sri Lankan Government’s own investigation into alleged war crimes.
This was revealed by the Assistant Secretary of State, Nisha Biswal during her visit to Sri Lanka a few weeks ago, reflecting a major shift in US policy towards Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, the EU delegation to the UN in Geneva said it would continue to promote reconciliation and accountability in Sri Lanka.
