The Colombo Fort Magistrate yesterday ordered that the suspect alleged to have been involved in verbally abusing and assaulting a Russian diplomat, be released on bail.  The identification parade scheduled for yesterday was cancelled by Magistrate Priyantha Liyanage since the victim Russian diplomat who had been named as the first witness in the case was not present in Court.

The suspect was ordered to be released on a surety bail of Rs.100,000 and further magisterial inquiry was fixed for November 30.
The suspect was arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) soon after his anticipatory bail application was rejected by Court on September 14.

Police were investigating the incident using video footage posted on Facebook showing a man at the wheel of a BMW blocking the diplomat’s car at the car park of a Colombo supermarket and verbally abusing him. Counsel Mahinda Jayawardena with Mahesh Alahapperuma appeared for the suspect.  CCD Chief Inspector Mahin Kanda with SI Pushpakumara Ranasinghe appeared for the prosecution.
