The Irresistible Rise of Mr. Signno premieres this week

Playwright and director Indika Ferdinando who has received state theatre awards for several plays including ‘Colombo Colombo’ and ‘Janadipathi Thaththa’ will be presenting his latest production ‘The Irresistible Rise of Mr. Signno on October 10 and 11 at 6.30 pm at the Asoka College Gymnasium in Maradana.

Indika is a senior lecturer at the Drama, Ballet and Modern Dance Department at the University of the Visual and Performing Arts in Colombo, and is presently reading a practice-led PhD in directing theatre at Monash University, Australia. This new play is the creative component of his research which explores the performative elements in Sinhalese ritual practices and the transposition of these elements in contemporary theatre.

A joint project between Monash University and the University of the Visual and Performing Arts in collaboration with Theatre Plus, The Irresistible Rise of Mr. Signno is both an allegory and a heroic story which looks at how a ‘nobody’ becomes ‘somebody’ in a Sri Lankan sociopolitical setting.

The cast of the play comprises Stefan Tirimanne, Saviour Kanishka, Saumya Liyanage, Jithendra Vidyapathy, Anasuya Subasinghe, Nipuni Sharada, Kasuni Fernando, Ruwan Wijalamage, Lahiru Liyanage, Jeena Geeth, Thenniarachchige Sumudu, Nishan Eramudugodagamage, Nelum Kurugala Arachchi, Dasun Harshana, Akalanka Prabhashwara, Sanka llleperumaarahchi and Chamanee Hewagama. The creative team includes Suranga Edirisinghe, Bimsara Hatharasingha and Dinusha
