The terms of office of some 21 local government bodies which were to end tomorrow (16) and two others which were to end on October 31 have been extended until December 31, said Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister Faiszer Mustapha yesterday.

“After consulting President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, we have decided to extend the terms of the 23 local government bodies. As the tenures of these institutions are nearing completion, it’s only natural to extend them,” he said.
The minister said he hoped to publish the relevant gazette notification today (15).

Accordingly, the tenure of the Municipal Councils of Colombo, Dehiwala-Mt. Lavinia, Sri Jayewardenepura, Kotte, Moratuwa, Gampaha, Negombo, Kurunegala, Kandy, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, Badulla, Galle, Matara, Ratnapura, Anuradhapura, Hambantota and Kalmunai plus those of five Pradeshiya Sabha have been extended till December 31.

The government, in March this year, extended the terms of office of 234 local government bodies up to May 15. These local government bodies whose terms were extended were placed under special commissioners once their terms expired on May 15.

The terms of office of several other local government bodies ended in July, yet others will end in October.
Mr. Mustapha had earlier said that the government intended to hold the next local government elections under electoral divisions and a mixed proportionate system early next year.
