International drug trafficker Samantha Kumara alias Wele Suda was convicted and sentenced to death yesterday by Colombo High Court Judge Preethi Padman Soorasena. Wele Suda has been charged with possessing and peddling 7.05 grams of heroin on December 4, 2008 at Mount Lavinia.

Judge said… the action of the convict had caused irreparable damage to society

The Judge delivering his verdict observed that the case against the convict was proven beyond reasonable doubt by the prosecution.
The Judge, while imposing death sentence, said that maximum punishment should be imposed in incidents like these, since the action of the convict had caused irreparable damage to society, to individuals and to the country.
He asserted that imposing maximum sentence on the convict would make other drug traffickers to think twice in trafficking heroin to Sri Lanka.

State Counsel Suharshi Herath, in her submissions, told Judge that since the accused had been arrested in Pakistan, while internationally drug trafficking, this conviction of maximum penalty could be imposed as a message to the global drug racketeers, not to make Sri Lanka a drug trafficking hub.

The Judge also upheld the submissions of State Counsel Suharshi Herath and said that the Defence Counsel had not made any submission on behalf of the convict. However, the Judge overruled the dock statement made by Wele Suda, who asserted that he was arrested before the Mount Lavinia Court on the date of the incident, while he was there for some other matter, by the Narcotics Bureau sleuths and introduced 84 grams of heroin.

He was arrested on December 4, 2008 at Mount Lavinia by the Police Narcotics Bureau with 84 grams of heroin. However, the Government Analyst had stated in his report that the contents in the packet produced to him for the examination contained 7.05 grams of pure heroin. Judge Prithipathman Soorasena directed the Prisons officials to produce Wele Suda before the JMO before escorting him to the prison.
