Moratuwa Municipal Councillors have been left in a limbo after the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government omitted the Moratuwa Municipality in the gazette notification extending the terms of LG councils to December 31.

The Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government last week extended the term of 22 LG bodies in the country. Even though the government announced that the term of 23 LG bodies would be extended only 22 were included in the gazette notification.

The oversight led to a tense situation at the Moratuwa Municipality premises earlier this week when the municipal commissioner prevented the mayor and councillors from entering the premises as the municipality was not included in the gazette notification.

Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government, Faizer Mustapha said that the ministry had accidentally omitted the Moratuwa Municipal Council in the gazette notification. “We have rectified the mistake. I signed the gazette notification last Friday and we have sent it to the Government Printer and it is to be published by Friday (October 23),” he said.

Meanwhile, Government Printer Gamini Fonseka said they were yet to receive the notification. “There were only the names of 22 LG bodies in the notification when it was sent to us but we heard that we should receive the notification to be published,” he said.

Colombo, Sri Jayawardenapura, Dehiwela- Mount Lavinia MCs were among the 23 LG bodies to have its terms extended to December 31 early this month.
