Former UPFA MP Sajin De Vass Gunawardena was permitted to be away from the country between October 25 and 30 for the purpose of seeking medical treatment.89

Permission was granted by Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya with two additional sureties of Rs.1,000,000 each.

Mr. Gunawardena was earlier banned from leaving the country and his diplomatic passport impounded. Counsel Kamal Gunasinghe, appearing for the suspect, requested the Magistrate to release the suspect’s passport, since he had to convert his previously issued diplomatic passport into a normal passport, so that he could travel to Singapore for medical treatment. Bribery Commission officers objected saying the investigations were not yet concluded and permitting Mr. Gunawardena to leave country might hamper the investigations.

The magistrate ordered that suspect should return his passport on his return on November 3, and submit the medical report on
the same day.
