Untitled-1President Maithripala Sirisena concluded his four day official tour to Thailand yesterday after a Royal Audience with Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, the Crown Princess of Thailand at Sra Pathum Palace in Bangkok

During the warm and cordial discussion with President Sirisena, Princess Sirindhorn recalled her visit to Sri Lanka in 2012 and said she was highly impressed and marvelled visiting the ancient irrigation system in Polonnaruwa, which is still intact and contributes to food production in Sri Lanka. She said there was a huge potential to develop tea industry in Thailand with the assistance of Sri Lanka and she also visited a tea plantation in the Central Province of Sri Lanka.

In response, President Sirisena said he was from Sri Lanka’s historic city of Polonnaruwa and added Sri Lanka was delighted to assist Thailand to develop the tea industry. A bilateral interaction between the officials of the two countries would initiate the ground work for the project to develop Thai tea industry which would benefit both countries. President Sirisena wished a speedier recovery to her ailing father King Bhumibol Adulyadej (87) and also invited Princess Sirindhorn to visit Sri Lanka at a convenient time to her. Accepting the invitation, Princess Sirindhorn said she looked forward to pay a visit once again to Sri Lanka despite her busy schedule.
