Lanka starts training for next Netball C’ships in Thailand

The 10th Asian Sen ior Netbal l Championships is scheduled to take place from July 30 to August 7, 2016 in Thailand. The International Netball Federation (IFNA) has directed the Asian Netball Federation to conduct this competition on the above mentioned dates. At the last Asian Netball Tournament held in Singapore (2014), ten teams took part and Singapore emerged champions with Sri Lanka as the runnersup. Next year too ten teams are expected to take part in the event. They are: Singapore, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunai, Chinese Taipei and Myanmar. In the competition which commenced in 1985 Sri Lanka has won the Asian Netball title on four occasions. They are: 1989, 1997, 2001 and 2009.

Last year Sri Lanka entered the final played at the Singapore Sports Hub and were beaten by Singapore by 59 goals to 41 due to poor midcourt play. The champions and runners-up (Singapore and Sri Lanka) qualified to take part in the World Cup competition held in Sydney, Australia. The next Netball World Cup is scheduled to be held at a venue yet to be decided in 2019 where the winners and runners-up of the 2016 Asian competition will take part. Sri Lanka has already picked a pool of 60 players from the district level. Last time due to the shortage of time the organisers were unable to make appropriate arrangements. This time they have made adequate arrangements to pick the best available talent for the competitions.

Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera met members of the Sri Lanka Netball Federation and congratulated them on picking a pool well in advance for the competitions that lay ahead and said that the Sports Ministry will give their unstinted support for the contest. He also requested the Sri Lanka Netball Federation to reduce the selected pool to 30 so that the Sports Ministry will be able to see to their needs. The Sports Minister also requested the Sri Lanka Netball Federation to inquire from the various district associations why some players could not be included in the netball pool and to see to their needs as well. The period of the Netball Coach selected for the last World Cup is due to expire in December and until then she will be conducting the training for pool players. The new coach will be appointed in due course stated the President of the Sri Lanka Netball Federation Mrs. Yasa Ramachandra.
