Unique film aims at local, int’l audience

Untitled-9Two well known film world personalities – Dr. Arosha Fernando and Sanath Abeysekara – are planning to make a unique movie on a theme in a globally accepted style that will cater to audiences here and abroad. Director Sanath Abeysekera earns a special place having made five successful films based on historical plots and those movies did well at the box office too. Sanath Abeysekera who marked his entry to the cinema with his maiden direction ‘One Blood’, a film which was an attempt to restore peace in the country, later directed 26 teledramas including a number of the popular creations. Armed with an OCIC diploma on film making, Sanath later ventured into cinema with his hits bringing new light and hope to the local cinema industry.

His maiden movie Mahindagamanaya screened in 2012 grossed Rs. 250 million, making a profit exceeding 300%. This was followed by the movie ‘Siri Daladagamanaya’ in 2014, which won the recent SIGNIS / OCIC award for the most widely watched movie of the year. Anagarika Dharmapala Srimathano was screened earlier this year and Maharaja Ajasath which is still running in theatres continues to make a remarkable impact.Untitled-8

Dr. Arosha Fernando known as a committed Producer who has produced the highest number of creations in the shortest time span of 3 years including 7 movies, 3 teledramas and 2 stage plays to his credit has partnered with Sanath Abeysekera for his 8th movie production which will focus on the 1998 Temple of the Tooth attack in Kandy as a detective story with a touch of Hollywood, instilling suspense throughout the movie. The high-budget and fast-paced movie is planned to cater to the Sri Lankan market as well as the International audience, and will be the first of its kind to be produced in the local film industry. Darshana Ruwan Dissanayake will direct the music for the film. Meanwhile, the world premiere of Dr. Arosha Fernando’s latest movie ‘Guru Geethaya’ was held in Melbourne, Australia recently, underlining Dr. Fernando’s burning desire to take Sri Lankan cinema beyond our boundaries.
