BY JANATH DE SILVA A 23-year-old mother of two children was killed when she was pinned under a ten-wheeled road-roller which had moved back down a hilly road at MeetiyagodaUntitled-2

Nilanka Madushani died on admission to the Arachcikanda Rural Hospital in Hikkaduwa. The woman, her 24-year-old husband Gayan Chaturange and their two children one aged five and the other seven months had been riding on a motorcycle uphill when the road-roller had suddenly moved back due to an alleged technical defect knocking them down. Police said the road roller which was reportedly owned by a local politician should have been transported on a long based vehicle and not driven on public roads. They said the driver was not in possession of a valid licence to drive that class of vehicles. The driver who fled from the scene of the tragedy surrendered to the Meetiyagoda police through a area politician. Meanwhile, a lorry has had a narrow escape by averting a collision with the road roller by turning into a by-road. Traffic Branch OIC Upul Mendis, Sergeant 36675 Rupachandra, PCc 64818 Samantha, and 45952 Perera are conducting further investigations on the instructions of Meetiyagoda Police OIC H.D. Piyapala.
