TEXT & PICS BY MUDITHA DAYANANDA Despite a number of traffic plans the stagnant traffic during peak hours at the Welikada junction at Rajagiriya was a hassle, motorists and pedestrians complained. Vehicles coming along the Old Kotte Road, Nawala- Rajagiriya Road, Jayawardenapura Mawatha, Buthgamuwa Road and vehicles travelling from Battaramulla to Borella should pass the Welikada junction. Motorists have to spend between 30 to 40 minutes in their vehicles waiting for the traffic to move. Even though a new traffic plan was implemented in the area, residents said it was unsuccessful.

The traffic lights at the junction caused congestion even when there was no rush in traffic. Three wheeler drivers in the area said they were forced to charge twice the fee due to the traffic which in turn led to commuters refusing to take a three wheeler. Many are of the opinion that the traffic police directing vehicles would be more efficient. Welikada Police OIC IP Sudath Asmadala said a new traffic plan for the junction had not been made as yet. “Even though the plans so far have not been a 100 percent successful we hope to implement something that woulds resolve the issues faced by motorists because of the traffic lights. It would be easier if there was a fly over,” he said
