The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has appointed a committee headed by Minister S.B. Dissanayake to examine the political situation within the party and recommend measures to avert a split, it is learnt. A group of SLFP seniors, presently holding positions in the government, have met President Maithripala Sirisena to discuss the crisis triggered by some MPs deciding to form a new party with the backing of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. They had told the President at this meeting that such a split would only ensure the victory of the United National Party (UNP).
