The Central Committee of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) is divisive on the opinion on the move to initiate disciplinary action against its MPs who attended last Thursday’s public rally organized by the Joint Opposition under the leadership of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, it is learnt.  The CC members, loyal to President Maithripala Sirisena, insist on action against these MPs. However, moderate members are of the view that the joint opposition used that rally only to criticize the United National Party (UNP) and its policies, and therefore it did not warrant disciplinary action by the SLFP. “It was a rally against the UNP. The speakers at the event were not critical of the SLFP or its leadership. Therefore, why should we take action?” CC member who currently holds a ministerial post, and insisted on anonymity asked. He said, “If it is taken up in the CC, I will oppose.” However, there are others pushing for action. Earlier, SLFP General Secretary Agriculture Minister Duminda Dissanayake wrote to them warning against the participation in this rally. Yet, those MPs, loyal to Mr. Rajapaksa, defied it and attended the rally.
