Ending the dry spell that prevailed in many parts of the country, heavy rains were reported in the country marking the beginning of the April rainy season.

The Meteorology Department said Galle district experienced the heaviest rain fall exceeding 125 mm. Heavy rains with thunderstorms were reported in Hambantota, Chilaw, Nuwara Eliya, Kurunegala and Polonnaruwa, the Met. Department Duty Forecaster said. However, he said the rainfall reported in Colombo was so low that could not be measured. With the change of atmosphere, showers or thundershowers will occur and increase in most parts of the island particularly in the afternoons, he added. The department predicted that several spells of showers will occur in the Northern, North-central, Eastern and Uva provinces and in the Hambantota districts. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere after 2.00 pm. There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers. The people are requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.
