Former Narahenpita Crimes OIC Inspector Sumith Champika who was arrested by the CID on Wednesday, was yesterday ordered to be remanded till May 5 by Colombo Additional Magistrate Thilina Gamage.

The IP was arrested on charges of covering up investigations relating to the murder of ruggerite Wasim Thajudeen. The CID arrested the former OIC after he was summoned to the CID office on Wednesday afternoon to record his statement. The charred body of Thajudeen was found inside his car on May 17, 2012, and had appeared to have crashed into a wall on Park Road, Narahenpita. The controversial death of the ruggerite which was at first determined to be due to an accident was recently pronounced a murder by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court. Earlier, Colombo Additional Magistrate Nishantha Peiris had instructed the CID to expedite investigations into the death of Thajudeen. The CID initiated a fresh investigation into the death and compared the latest findings in the case with the earlier evidence and took the former OIC into custody on charges of withholding evidence. Police spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said the former OIC had been questioned on several previous occasions along with several other police officers in connection with the probe into the death of Thajudeen.
