Three women nabbed at BIA WITH GOLD

BY DEEPA ADIKARI AND T.K.G. KAPILA Three Sri Lankan women, who attempted to smuggle gold and gold jewellery, valued more than Rs.60 million were taken into custody last morning by Katunayake Airport Customs

The suspects had attempted to find exit under the pretext of being disabled women on wheel chairs, the Customs officials said. The suspects were between 40 and 50 years of age and residents of Colombo. They had arrived from Dubai. Two of the women were on wheel chairs pushed by the other. Asst. Superintendent of Customs Nuwan Abeynayake said the stock of gold included 40 gold biscuits, and jewellery weighing 10.5 kilos. He said that investigations had revealed that one of the women had gone abroad for the first time and others had made several trips abroad. They are suspected to have been carrying on the smuggling for a long time. Asst. Superintendents Nuwan Abeynayake and Rasika Samanjith area conducting investigating.
