Saunders beat Blue Star to qualify for semis

BY SUSIL PREMALAL Saunders SC beat Blue Star SC Kalutara by 1 goal to nil to enter the semi-finals of the Cargills Food City FA Cup football tournament at the Race Course ground in Colombo yesterday. The first semi-final between Colombo FC and Army SC will be played on May 28 at 3 p.m. followed by the second semifinal between Saunders versus Renown at 5 p.m. Both games will be at the Race Course grounds in Colombo.

The final will be on June 3 at 3.30 p.m. at the same venue. In the quarter-finals Colombo FC beat Mannar Hillary SC by a staggering margin of 15 goals to one and Renown beat Java Lane 5-1, Sri Lanka Army beat SL Air Force 4-3 on penalties and yesterday Saunders beat Blue Star 1-0. In the Saunders-Blue Star game there was a tough fight and neither side broke the deadlock. Ivorian Abdul Mohammed scored for Saunders in the 88th minute. Five hundred and nine (509) teams took part in the competition and to date 505 matches have been completed. The winning team will receive rupees seven hundred thousand and the runners-up will receive rupees five hundred thousand. Last year Colombo FC emerged champions .
