TEXT & PICS BY GANIDU ROCHANA SAMARATHUNGA The Randiyawara Praja water project in Kirikitta, West Danawkanda, commissioned under the late President Premadasa in his Udagam scheme in 1991, now lies abandoned and more than 150 families are facing severe difficulties due to the non-availability of drinking water. The project had cost more than Rs.10 million since its initiation, but with the neglect of the project, the residents are badly affected.

Two rooms for motor pumps and 4 motor pumps were provided for this project as well, but with the nonpayment of electricity dues, the power had been discontinued. Two pumps have become defective already due to neglect. The two public wells in the area are being used by the public for their needs. Despite Rs.1 million having been allocated last year for this project, nothing appears to have been done. The people themselves had pooled money and settled the overdue electricity bills; but the authorities had failed to utilize this money for the revamping of the project.

The residents appeal to the authorities to attend to the supply of power in the area and to recommence the supply of water. Replying to our queries on this matter, the Deputy Minister of Megapolis, Lasantha Alagiyawanna said action would be taken in the very near future to attend to this project and to restore the supply of water to the families.
