Roads, houses and river banks have been turned into garbage dumps by residents, especially those living in Kolonnawa, Wellampitiya and Kottikawatha who were most affected by the Roanu. Authorities are engaged in a desperate battle to clear mountains of garbage piled along the roads, as residents who finally returned home have begun to clear out their homes and return to normalcy. An Army official at Wellampitya said people were bringing their garbage to roadsides, while the army was cleaning the main roads and sub roads in Wellampitya, Kolonnawa. “We cleared the garbage which was brought in with the water using machines and workers provided by private companies.” Daily Mirror spoke to a few people in the area who wanted to rebuild their lives.
