BY AJITH SIRIWARDANA Former Minister Wimal Weerawansa yesterday gave a statement before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry to Investigate and Inquire into Serious Acts of Fraud, Corruption and Abuse of Power, State Resources and Privileges (PRECIFAC) over the alleged misappropriation of government funds amounting to Rs.1 billion .
A spokesman for the PRECIFAC said a statement was recorded from Mr. Weerawansa for more than four years, with regard to the frauds and corruption in the institutions under his ministry during the previous regime. He said a complaint had been received by the commission alleging that Mr. Weerawansa had given vehicles and fuel of the Engineering Corporation to his personal staff without a proper mechanism and that houses and shops were given to his kith and kin. The spokesman said the government had incurred a loss of Rs. 1 billion due to this misappropriation.
