The Kaduwela Magistrate yesterday released former economic development minister Basil Rajapaksa and the Divi Neguma Department’s former director general R.A.A.K Ranawaka on bail in the wake of the Colombo High Court revising the remand order.

Having considered the bailrevision application filed on behalf of Mr. Rajapaksa and Mr. Ranawaka, the Colombo High Court directed the Kaduwela Magistrate to revise his remand order on the two suspects . High Court Judge M.C.B.S. Morais directed the Court Registrar to fax the revision order to the Kaduwela Magistrate. He observed that the suspects had been granted bail by the High Court in similar cases and that the investigations had been completed.
The suspects were remanded by the Kaduwela Magistrate under the Public Property Act on charges of misappropriating Rs.36.5 million belonging to the Divi Neguma Department to buy and distribute GI pipes as part of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa’s presidential election campaign. When the bail application was taken up for inquiry, Senior State Counsel Chaminda Atukorala informed court that the AG had on the previous date objected to bail to the suspects because the investigations were not over. He said he would not object to bail now since the investigations on the important issues in the case had been completed. The revision application on behalf of Mr. Rajapaksa was filed by his instructing Attorney Sanath Wijewardena and supported by Gamini Marapone PC with Navin Marapone and Kaushalya Molligoda. The petitioner had cited FCID ASP K.D.A. Kithsiri, DIG Ravi Waidyathilaka, IGP Pujitha Jayasundera, Prisons Commissioner H.M.N.C. Wanasinghe and the Attorney General as respondents.
