BY DARSHANA SANJEEWA The Colombo Municipality was on the warpath with several commercial establishments which have evaded the payment of rates over the years, accumulating in arrears close to Rs.3 billion. The Colombo Municipality Commissioner V.A.K. Anura said the lack of funds had left the local government body in a lurch. Steps were being taken to collect the rates due by imposing legal action on those who failed to take steps to pay the arrears. The deadline for payments had been extended and will remain so, allowing residents and owners of commercial properties to pay up. “We will collect due taxes according to the clause of the act. They can pay a down payment of fifty percent and the remaining amount can be paid over an extended period,” the Commissioner said. The Municipality has taken measures to collect rates from residents and commercial property owners. The addresses of properties with arrears are published in the newspaper and notices are then sent. The Municipality thereafter seizes the properties and auctions them if the necessary payments are not made.
