Megapolis Ministry to save Ragama Town from floods

TEXT & PICS BY DEVAPRIYA CHANDRASIRI With the aim of preventing the Ragama Town being constantly submerged by flood waters during rains, a special project has been launched by the Megapolis and Western Province Development Ministry to develop five tanks in the area and also to clean up all canals in and around the town. Initially the Ragama Ihalagama Tank would be developed. A discussion was held recently at the Ragama Ihalagama Sri Sugatharama Temple chaired by the Viharadhipathi Ven. Thuruwila Wimaladamma Thera regarding the implementation.

This discussion was attended by Western Provincial Councilors, Dolton Janaka Suriya Bandara, Pradeep Perera and Ms.Nirosha Athukorale. Ja-Ela Divisional Secretary B.H.N.B. Jayasundera and officials of the Irrigation Department, Agrarian Services Department, Land Reclamation Department and Ja-Ela Divisional Secretariat officials were also present at this discussion. The residents had already pledged labour assistance in the Ihalagama Tank development. It was also planned to include, Peralanda, Walpola, Kadurugama and Ragama Kapuwa Wewa in this project. It was also expected to bring under cultivation the vast acreage of barren paddy lands in the area.
