TEXT & PICS BY MUDITHA DAYANANDA Even though the Highlevel Road has been widened and renovated to a large extent, pedestrians using the road complained of narrow and irregular space in pavements and walkways for them to use. Many complained that there were totally no space at all in some areas of the road and others said that while a little space had been earmarked for pedestrians, often it was close to drains with hardly any space to walk or often had vehicles parked in the allocated space for pedestrians. M. M Bandula said in some places there was not even a foot of space for pedestrians to walk along. “After the little space that is left for them is the drain and in some places, the drains are left open without the concrete slabs. Sometimes my peon has to climb down to the drain when he is going somewhere,” he said. Kusuma Kodithuwakku, a resident of Delkanda said there was no space for them to walk home along the road. “When I get off the bus I have no space to walk here. Especially after four in the evening, because this area is filled with traffic and the motorcycle riders use whatever space available for us on the pavement that we have as well,” she said. Many of these stretches in the road were found between Nugegoda and Maharagama. When contacted, Road Development Authority (RDA) Additional Director General E. M. P. R. K Bandara said they had been informed of the situation and were looking into the matter. “We can see the problem as well. No matter how much we widen the roads some areas are used for parking. However, we are looking into this now and hope to rectify it soon,” he said.
